Turkish Gate or Rumi Darwaza – Lucknow

Turkish Gate or Rumi Darwaza

Rumi Darwaja is one of the most famous landmarks in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It was built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh. This grand gateway is an example of Awadhi architecture and is often called the β€œTurkish Gate” because it looks similar to ancient gates in Turkey. The word β€œRumi” comes from the name of the famous Sufi poet Rumi, who lived in the region that is now Turkey.

History

The Rumi Darwaza is about 60 feet tall and was built during a time of great famine. Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula started the construction of this and other buildings to give work to the poor and help them earn a living. This shows his care and generosity towards the people of his kingdom.

The gateway is beautifully designed with floral patterns and carvings. It does not use wood orΒ Β Β Β Β  iron, but is made of bricks and lime plaster. It has a large central arched gate and smaller structures on theΒ Β Β Β  sides. On top of the gate, there is a beautiful umbrella-like structure, called a chhatri.

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β  Rumi Darwaza once served as the entrance to the old city of Lucknow. Today, it is a symbol of the city’s rich history and culture. Tourists from all over the world come to see it and take pictures. It looks even more beautiful at night when it is lit up with lights. Rumi Darwaza truly represents the grandeur of Lucknow’s royal past.
